SEBRING - Wolves on the hunt for prey will not hesitate to get themselves a little wet, and the Wolves of Newsome sure showed that to be the case as they dominated the district meet Friday.
Both halves of the meet were won going away as the Newsome boys totaled 618 points to Winter Haven's 240 and Sebring's 235.5. On the girls side, Newsome tallied 589 points to Sebring's 382.5 and Lake Region's 290. It wasn't until the seventh and eighth events that another school saw a winner, with Winter Haven's Derek Zellner winning the boys 50-yard freestyle.
Newsome failed to take first in only two other events - the boys 100 free when Armwood's Paul Vila won in 53.05, ahead of Newsome's Arun Ghosh, Hayden Parker and Brandon Crawford; and the girls 100 breaststroke with Sebring's Paige Giller edging Courtney Lehman.
"The boys took first in regionals last year and fourth in state and the girls fourth in regional and 13th in state," coach Joanne Grogan said. "...We're hoping for the boys to win state and for the girls to be in the top three. "
In most of the events, Newsome had three or four of the fastest preliminary times, and in many cases lowered them in the final heat. Numerous times the Wolves took the top two finishes and on occasion the top three or four, such as the 1-4 sweep of the boys 200 freestyle with Jacob Bukaweski winning, Justin Waterman taking second, Tim Foster third and Wil Heim fourth. It happened again in the 100 butterfly with Jason Taylor, Aleks Ans, Waterman and Brian Clancy taking the top four spots.
The Newsome girls pulled off a top-three finish in two events, with Kelli and Kati Kyle going 1-2 in the 100 backstroke and Ashley Becker taking third. Sharla Milne, Carrie Logan and Geraldine Nunez duplicated the feat in the 500 free.
