Today's Letters: Words may shock, but kids are good

Re: Writer needs to take another look Oct. 17 letter
I am glad that there are still people like Ruth Parsons (Don't dump all youths together, Oct. 14 letter) in this world who know that most young people today are just fine.
I have been teaching in Hernando County Schools since 1985, and I can say that the students in my middle school classroom today are actually better behaved than the students I taught in the '80s and '90s. I love my job, I love going to work each day and I love today's kids.
Students today seem so much more involved in helping others. I know many students who are involved in volunteering at other schools, help with recycling, and raise money and collect items for the needy. Today's students also seem to be much more tolerant of other people's differences than they were in the past.
Kids want to hang out with kids. Why shouldn't they be allowed to be with their friends in the mall? God knows there aren't many places they can be with their friends.
I am sorry letter writer Jerry Donavan is offended by their language, but didn't he ever use language that was shocking to his parents when he was young? I know I did.
Instead of condemning and berating young people, maybe Mr. Donavan should get involved: Volunteer at a school and get to know young people.

Horne is ideal for county top job
Hernando County commissioners, are you searching a replacement for Administrator Gary Kuhl?
We have tallied our votes and Assistant Public Works director David Horne, a retired U.S. Navy commander who is now serving as the county's Solid Waste Department director, was our selection for your man at the helm.
We share the thought "promote from within."
We believe Horne's military training, including perseverance, problem-solving and a no-quit attitude, will help him navigate his ship to advance patriotism, unity, respect for law enforcement and faith in all levels of our Hernando County government.
