Karen's Kit'n Kaboodle, the thrift shop at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, will have a Halloween Spooky Bag Sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 31.
The cost to fill bag will be $5 for those not dressed in costume, and $4 for those in costume.

Blood donors receive special treats Oct. 31
LifeSouth Community Blood Center will host a Halloween Harvest Happening blood drive from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Oct. 31 at the donor center, 12395 Cortez Blvd.
Blood donors will receive a special Halloween T-shirt, candy treats, cupcakes, hot dogs and drinks. The first 25 donors will receive a movie pass to Beacon Theatres.
The event will also include face painting, a coloring contest, costume contest and activities for children.
Those who wish to donate blood must be at least 17, weigh at least 110 pounds and show a valid photo ID. For information, call 597-2002.

Gardening calendar has tips for everyone
The 2008 Hernando County Master Gardener Calendar is now available.
The calendar features month-by-month expert advice on central Florida landscaping of interest to beginners as well as longtime gardeners.

Women's a cappella group seeks singers
The Hernando Hills Hi-Lites invites area women to join the chorus, which is now preparing for Christmas concert performances.
The Hi-Lites, an a cappella chorus open to women of all ages, is a chartered member of Harmony Inc. Director Jeannine Zach teaches the basics of singing a cappella, four-part harmony, as well as proper vocal techniques and vocal aerobics.
The local group performs at community events, churches and special occasions and competes at both local and international levels.
Rehearsals are from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Mondays at United Methodist Church, 7079 Mariner Blvd. Starting in November, all rehearsals will concentrate on familiar Christmas songs.

Register for classes on first aid, pathogens
The following classes will be offered through the American Safety and Health Institute:
A basic universal first aid class will be from 6 to 10 p.m. Nov. 8 at the Spring Hill Enrichment Center, 11375 Cortez Blvd. behind Oak Hill Hospital. The program content is based on the recommendations of the 2005 National First Aid Science Advisory Board. Upon completion of the class, students will receive a completion card. The cost is $20.
A blood-borne pathogens class, which will include AIDS awareness, will be from 6 to 10 p.m. Nov. 15 at the Spring Hill Enrichment Center. Upon completion, students will receive a completion card based on the information and training requirements of the Department of Labor, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, the Mine Safety and Health Administration, and other agencies.

Dawn Center sponsors student art contest
Hernando County middle and high school students are invited to participate in an art contest hosted by the Dawn Center of Hernando County, in conjunction with the Hernando County School District.
Participants can create an original piece of work that reflects the Dawn Center's services and mission. Winning designs will be used in future Dawn Center T-shirts, posters and literature.
All those who participate will receive a day pass to Weeki Wachee Springs. Students who place in the contest will receive gift baskets with gift certificates to local restaurants, movie theaters and attractions, including season passes to Weeki Wachee Springs. The first-place winner will receive four tickets to Busch Gardens and a gift certificate to EB Games. The top three artists will also be recognized in the Dawn Center newsletter, local newspapers and at a public presentation and display at Brooksville City Hall on Dec. 3.
The entry deadline is Nov. 1.
The Dawn Center of Hernando County serves women, children and men who have been victims of domestic and/or sexual violence. The Dawn Center has a 24-hour crisis hotline and a secure, unlisted shelter location for victims who need a safe place to stay. Outreach services, including individual advocacy, group sessions, legal advocacy and public speakers are also available.

Dinner-dance Nov. 3 will honor veterans
The Knights of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary, St. Jude Council 6383, will host a dinner-dance to honor veterans Nov. 3 at the K of C Hall, 10470 Spring Hill Drive.

Flag football begins soon for boys and girls
The city of Brooksville Recreation will offer the Going Deep Flag Football 4 Kids program from 10 a.m. to noon Saturdays, starting Nov. 17, at the fields next to the Jerome Brown Community Center in Tom Varn Park, 301 Darby Lane.
The program is for boys and girls in first through eighth grades. The cost is $50 for the 10-week program, which includes a shirt.
Participants will learn the skills of receiving and throwing in a progressive manner. Instructors include John Fego, Eric Bowman and Lou Bermudez, who are certified coaches. For information, call 544-5498.

The Spring Hill Art League is still accepting exhibitors for the 34th annual Fall Harvest of Art, which will be Nov. 17 and 18 at the Outlet Shopping Mall, 3201 Commercial Way.
Artists and craftspeople can display their original fine art, photography and country crafts. More than $5,000 in prize money is expected to be awarded.

Open mic scheduled at botanical garden
The Spring Hill Acoustic Guitar Club will present a music jam in the Nature Coast Botanical Gardens at noon Nov. 3. The gardens is at 1489 Parker Ave., off Spring Hill Drive.

Join motorcycle ride to salute veterans
ABATE of Florida, Freedom Chapter, will host a Salute to Our Veterans Back Roads Rally on Nov. 3.
The event will start with sign-ups from 8:30 to 10 a.m. at the Marine Corps League Detachment 708, 8405 Sunshine Grove Road. The cost to participate in the motorcycle ride is $10 per person, which will include coffee and doughnuts.
The group will ride 110 miles with stops at Thunder Inn in Hernando, Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, IR-RU Family Social Club in Floral City and back to the Marine Corps detachment.

Advocates for long-term patients meet
The Withlacoochee Long-Term Care Ombudsman Council will meet at 10 a.m. Thursday at Lake Panasoffkee Parks and Recreation, 1582 County Road 459.
The council is made up of local ombudsmen whose goal is to improve the quality of life and care of residents of long-term care facilities. An ombudsman is a specially trained and certified volunteer approved by the governor and given authority under federal and state law to identify, investigate and resolve complaints.

This will be a judged show; first, second and third place prizes will be awarded in 20 classes. Also, $50 cash prizes will be awarded every hour.

The event will include living arts demonstrations of the past, including hand-cranked ice cream, broommaking, a lumberjack demonstration, spinning, horse-drawn carriage rides, butter churning, ropemaking, open hearth cooking and an archery exhibit. There will be farm animals, a women's skillet-throwing contest, pioneer costume contest, men's watermelon seed-spitting contest, kids' sack races and more.
