Business women to hold ceremony

SPRING HILL
The Hernando County Business and Professional Women will host "Celebrate America" National Business Women's Award Ceremony at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Atria Evergreen Woods, 7030 Evergreen Woods Trail.
The speaker will be Fawn Germer, bestselling author of Hard Won Wisdom, Mustang Sallies and, most recently, Mermaid Mambo. Germer is a four-time Pulitzer Prize-nominated journalist. She was a correspondent for the Washington Post and U.S. News & World Report.
Awards will be presented for Woman of the Year, Employer of the Year and Women of Achievement.
The event will also honor the return of Lt. Col. Ben Lacy of the U.S. Army National Guard. There will be a silent auction and 50/50 raffle.
All proceeds will benefit the scholarship fund, the Educational Foundation and the Dawn Center.

Marlins to perform variety act Nov. 8
Brookridge Entertainment will present The Marlins Nov. 8 at the clubhouse, 8150 Hampton St. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and showtime is 7 p.m.
The Marlins is a four-brother variety show using more than 20 different instruments. Using a tight vocal harmony, they perform many styles of music, such as Big Band, pop, rock, jazz, classical, bluegrass and show tunes.

Botanical Gardens to put on yard sale
A yard sale to benefit the Nature Coast Botanical Gardens will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 10 at the gardens, 1489 Parker Ave.
The Spring Hill Garden Club's plant nursery, which is adjacent to the gardens, will be open with a variety of plants available for purchase. Tours of the botanical gardens will be offered at no cost, but donations will be appreciated.
All funds raised will be used to maintain, promote, improve and expand the gardens. For information or to donate items for the sale, call 683-9933.

Trap shoot to benefit Central High NJROTC
The Hernando Sportsman's Club will host a benefit trap shoot at 9 a.m. Nov. 3 at the club in the Chassahowitzka Wildlife Management Area, off U.S. 19, north of Weeki Wachee. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m.
The event is a benefit to raise funds for additional program equipment for the Central High School NJROTC.
Those who preregister pay $35; on-site registration on event day is $40. Lunch is included. Trophies will be awarded in various age categories, as well as for Ladies High Score.

Group to discuss March on Nov. 10
The next Brooksville Discussion Group will meet at 10:30 a.m. Nov. 10 at Lykes Memorial Library, 238 Howell Ave.
The book to be discussed will be March, by Geraldine Brooks. Published in 2005 to critical acclaim, Brooks' novel is drawn from Louisa May Alcott's classic Little Women. It is a story based on the absent father, John March, who has gone off to war, leaving his wife and daughters.

New square dancing season set to begin
The Cloverleaf Leprechauns will begin its new square dancing season in November.
Dancing will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sundays, starting Nov. 4, with prerounds at 1:30 p.m., at the Heather House at Clover Leaf Farms, 900 N Broad St.
The caller will be Paul Place; there will be guest callers on the first and third Sundays of the month.

Learn to give your pet CPR and First Aid
A Pet CPR and First Aid class will be offered from 9 a.m. to noon Nov. 10 at Hernando County Animal Control, 19450 Oliver St.
Participants will learn pet CPR; how to administer medication; and how to address choking, bleeding, car accidents and poisoning of their pets. The instructor will be certified Red Cross instructor Linda Christian.
The cost is $20, which includes a certificate of completion. A limited number of the Pet First Aid Reference Book will be available for purchase for $13.
Animal Control's kennel will be open at 8 a.m. that day for those wishing to take a tour of the facility.

Computer club offers digital camera class
The Hernando Computer Club will offer a lecture class on digital cameras at 7 p.m. Monday at the Hernando County Shrine Club, 13400 Montour St.
The instructor is Wolfgang Steinberger, who will demonstrate the procedure of handling digital images from shooting to improving them. Memory cards and card readers will also be discussed, as well as simple techniques and free programs that can improve, correct and restore photos.

Birthday Ball to mark Marines' 232nd year
Marine Corps League Detachment 708 will celebrate the 232nd birthday of the United States Marine Corps with a Birthday Ball on Nov. 9 in the performing arts center at Heritage Pines Country Club, off County Line Road at 11524 Scenic Hills Blvd.
This is a formal event that will begin with cocktails at 6 p.m. Dinner will be at 7 p.m.; the menu choice is prime rib, chicken francaise or potato crusted salmon. Music and vocals will be provided by the Vic Thompkins Band.
The speaker will be detachment member Major Scott Brinton, an active duty Marine assigned to CENCOM (Central Command) at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa. Major Brinton is a frequent traveler to Iraq.

Children can take cartoon drawing class
Hernando County Recreation will offer a class on Cartoon Drawing 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays, starting Nov. 6, at Delta Woods Park, 3400 Deltona Blvd.

Learn about proper use of rain barrels
Florida Yards and Neighborhoods Program Coordinator John Korycki will present a rain barrel workshop at 10 a.m. Nov. 3 at the Hernando County Cooperative Extension Service, 19490 Oliver St.
Participants will learn how using rain barrels in one's landscape can be a great way to reduce dependence on irrigation and to cope with watering restrictions. Each participant will receive a completed rain barrel, along with instructions on its proper use, placement and decoration.
The cost for the class is $25 per completed barrel. Preregistration is a must and will be accepted on a first-come basis. For information or to register, call 754-4433.
