Patrol turns its radar on commercial trucks
By Times Staff Writer
Published October 24, 2007
The Florida Highway Patrol will target unsafe commercial truck drivers on state roads and highways as part of Operation Safe Ride, which aims to reduce deaths and injuries on state roads. The operation, which runs today and Thursday, will monitor commercial vehicles with radar, laser, motorcycles, unmarked patrol cars and aircraft. While commercial trucks were involved in about 8 percent of total crashes last year, records show they were involved in 13 percent of all fatal crashes. Their size puts drivers of smaller vehicles at a considerable disadvantage in collisions, state officials said.
