Magnet schools guide

Nature Coast Technical High School will conduct recruitment informational meetings for the 2008-09 school year in the school cafeteria on the following dates:

- 7 p.m. today.

- 7 p.m. Nov. 8.

Any eighth-grade student interested in attending, and upperclassmen wishing to transfer to Nature Coast, are invited to attend a meeting.

Applications for the lottery are due to the Nature Coast office, in care of Ginger Kretzer, by3:30 p.m. Jan. 11. All student portfolios are due by 3:30 p.m. Dec. 7.

Challenger K-8 School of Science and Mathematics will conduct parent orientation meetings for potential enrollment for the 2008-09 school year. Parents who want to submit a first-time application for enrollment must attend one of these meetings. Applications will be turned in at the end of the meeting.

Four meetings are planned:

- 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. Nov. 6.

- 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. Nov. 26.

Doors will be closed 10 minutes after each meeting has begun, and no one will be permitted to enter after that time.

At the meeting, parents must have their child's student number (which is also their lunch number), the name of their current school and their zoned school. For fifth-graders going into sixth grade, parents must know the zoned middle school their child would attend. Those who are not currently Hernando County residents must bring a copy of a housing contract to attach to the application. Families must live in Hernando County by the start of the school year.

Those who have a child on the waiting list do not have to attend the meeting, but must submit a new application card. For these parents, application cards and portfolio packets will be available starting Nov. 1 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays in the front office.

Portfolios and application cards will be due back to Challenger no later than 4:30 p.m. Dec. 7.

Chocachatti Elementary School will have orientation meetings starting in November for potential enrollment at the school, 4135 California St.

Attendance at one of the orientations is required to receive an application.

Orientations will be in the school cafeteria at these times:

- 4 p.m. Nov. 1.

- 7 p.m. Nov. 7.

- 7 p.m. Jan. 10.

A percentage of students will be selected through an audition or portfolio process. Students with special talents in art, music, theater or dance can submit an audition or portfolio to be considered.

Details and requirements are available at the school 8 a.m.-4 p.m. on school days. Audition tapes and portfolios will be due to the school no later than Dec. 3.

Those who previously attended an orientation or are on this year's waiting list must reapply for next year. New applications can be picked up in the office Nov. 1- Jan. 10. For information, call 797-7067.
