Tampa will get a taste of the Academy Awards this year as a Hollywood producer comes to town.

Gil Cates, who has produced the widely watched awards show 13 times, will appear at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center on Nov. 17, at 7:15 p.m., to present an insider's look at the awards ceremony and the entertainment industry as a whole.

Cates, 73, who has his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, started in the field as a page for NBC, moved on to stage management, and eventually took on director and producer's roles on television, film and Broadway.

His credits include Summer Wishes, Winter Dreams, I Never Sang for My Father, Consenting Adult, Do You Know the Muffin Man?, You Know I Can't Hear You When the Water's Running, and Voices.

A two-time president of the Directors Guild of America, he was dean of the School of Theatre, Film and Television at UCLA from 1990 to 1997.

Today Cates is the producing director of the Geffen Playhouse, a nonprofit professional theater company.

Cates comes to town at the invitation of the Hillel School of Tampa, which is hosting the black-tie event as the year's major fundraiser.

"We wanted to do something a little different, something that gives us the opportunity to reach out to the broader community," Head of School Amy Wasser said.

"His ties to Hollywood, television and theater will bring a unique perspective that the entire community can learn from."
