Borrow pit in Keystone a bit closer to approval

KEYSTONE - A proposed borrow pit off Lutz-Lake Fern Road inched toward reality Tuesday. The Hillsborough County planning department recommended vacating easements that would interfere with the dig. Commissioners affirmed that opinion 5-1, with Rose Ferlita dissenting.

"There will be some additional impact to property owners where they don't have that impact now," she said.

Lisa Beggs, who lives near the proposed excavation site, spelled out the outcome.

"Trucks are going to be in their back yard," said Beggs, secretary of the 550-home Ivy Lake Estates board. "We don't want there to be 30 to 40 trucks per day going in and out of there." (An application filed with the county put the maximum number of dump trucks closer to 100.)

Stephen Dibbs, the Northdale developer behind the proposed dirt pit, was out of the country at press time. If he gets the permits, digging could last a decade, according to the application.
