BMW flips, flies, killing passenger

A 20-year-old woman died Thursday afternoon when the BMW convertible she was riding in flipped and flew 291 feet, landing upside down, Hillsborough sheriff's officials said.

Rachel M. Morris of Riverview was killed when the 2007 BMW failed to negotiate a curve just east of Surfside Boulevard. The car went off the road, struck four posts and vaulted into the air. Morris was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver, Brittany L. Romer, 21, of Gibsonton, was airlifted to Tampa General Hospital, where she was listed in critical condition. Both women had been wearing seat belts, officials said.


Lawsuit filed over man's death in jail

The estranged wife of a shrimper found hanging in his cell has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the Hernando County Jail.

Angela Warren's lawsuit is the third such suit filed against Corrections Corporation of America, the company that runs the jail.

Daniel Warren died Nov. 2, 2005. His was the third suspected suicide in three months at the jail.


Humvee accident kills Pasco soldier

A soldier from Pasco County was killed in a Humvee roll-over accident in the maneuver area at Fort Riley, Kan., the Army said Thursday.

Sgt. Scott R. Turner, 30, of Land O'Lakes died Wednesday while serving as a transition team trainer.

He was an M1 armor crewman assigned to 2nd Battalion, 34th Armor Regiment, 1st Brigade, 1st Infantry Division.

Turner entered the Army in June 2001 and joined the 1st Infantry Division later that year. He had been deployed once to Iraq. Through transition team training, soldiers are trained to advise, teach, mentor and coach their counterparts in Iraq and Afghanistan.


School investigates mother's complaint

Gulf High School officials are investigating a physical education teacher accused of manhandling a student and calling him names.

The school launched its review after the student's mother complained that the teacher had grabbed her 17-year-old son by the back of the neck twice during class Friday and pushed him. The woman said the teacher also called her son stupid.
