TAMPA - Middleton coach Harry Hubbard didn't know what the school's single-game rushing record was before Friday night, but after watching Tigers tailback Carlton Jones rip off 275 yards in a 48-22 win over Tampa Bay Tech, he's pretty sure of what it is now.
"As far as I know, that's it," Hubbard said. "I can tell you I haven't had one like that since I've been here."
Jones, whom teammates call "Superman," scored three times, doing his damage on 27 carries. He had 10 rushes of 10 or more yards, including a 64-yard burst up the middle in the third quarter to gave the Tigers a 27-14 lead.
"Before the game, I told our offensive line, 'Get me to the line of scrimmage, and I'll do the rest,'" Jones said.
Jones wasn't the only standout for Middleton (5-3).
Senior quarterback DeAndre Presley passed for 148 yards and two touchdowns, both to receiver Jeremy Blount.
And Middleton's defense also got into the act, forcing seven Tampa Bay Tech (5-3) turnovers.
"I thought we played excellent," Hubbard said.
After falling behind 14-7, the Tigers scored 41 unanswered points.
Much of Middleton's damage came after a TBT miscue. And there were many. In addition to their turnover problems, the Titans had 13 penalties - 11 in the first half.
"We've just got to keep working," TBT coach C.C. Culpepper said. "We're a young team. We'll be okay."
Jones was more than okay for the Tigers. Plagued by fumbling problems and slowed by an ankle injury earlier in the season, he's now 100 percent - Friday it showed.
"He," Presley said, "had a huge night."
