TRINITY - Mitchell coach Scott Schmitz channeled George Michael on Friday.
Schmitz said faith helped stop a four-game losing streak dating back nearly a month, as the Mustangs shut down Clearwater Central Catholic 27-0.
"You got to have faith - we talked a lot about that before the game," Schmitz said. "I don't know if we've had a whole lot of faith in each other this season. But tonight our seniors really stepped up."
The Mustangs (3-5) got help from three seniors and a junior.
Senior Tate Humphrey went 8-for-15 passing with 113 yards, including a 63-yard touchdown to senior Tyrone Hendrix, who finished with two catches for 68 yards. Senior defensive lineman Colby Tuttle had 31/2 sacks and two tackles for a loss.
But junior Sterling Ross was the Mustangs' workhorse, with 20 carries for 114 yards and a touchdown. Ross also recovered a fumble by Humphrey in the end zone, after a 4-yard run for Mitchell's first score in the second quarter.
"His night was amazing," Humphrey said. "He ran the ball so hard - I'm so proud of that kid."
The Marauders (5-4) were held to 185 yards of total offense and had just 57 rushing yards. Quarterback Brent Henderson could only get CCC as far as the Mitchell 5, then was picked off by freshman cornerback Marcus Hicks.
Humphrey added a 10-yard touchdown run in the fourth.
"This is a big win," Humphrey said. "We lost four in a row and we needed this bad. The seniors stepped up real big - we had to because it was senior night."
"We needed a win in the worst way," Schmitz said. "It doesn't make a dang difference if it's a district win or not. A win is a win, and we got it, and hopefully we can get two more here and finish .500."
