Iris Gonzalez came to the Tampa Bay area from Venezuela at age 18 with a high school diploma and no English-speaking skills. To force herself to learn English, she stopped hanging out with her Spanish-speaking friends.

And, as often as time and money allowed, she took classes at the University of South Florida.

Today, at 31, Gonzalez is close to completing her undergraduate degree in political science. And after five years in sales and marketing with Telemundo, she is now director of multicultural relations for Bright House Networks.

Since joining Bright House at its St. Petersburg headquarters three years ago, Gonzalez has promoted the company among the Tampa Bay area's Hispanic population through sponsorships of everything from soccer tournaments to scholarships.

"Any initiative that I think will work for the company, it's amazing the support I have here," she said. "Of course, I make sure we brand it."

Gonzalez is pleased to see a united Hispanic community emerging in the Tampa Bay area.

"It will be easier for corporations to help," she said, adding that education is her top priority.

"Let's stop the parties and the awards," she said, referring to the multiple social events hosted by local nonprofit groups. "We want to support events that are really valuable to the community."
