Murder in 2007

More people have already been murdered in St. Petersburg this year than all of 2006. Here's a look at this year's 24 murders, with information from police on ones that were drug-related or tied to a domestic dispute or home invasion. The data confirm the consistency of murders in St. Petersburg over the years. Most people are killed south of Central Avenue, and roughly a third of all murders appear to be drug-related.

1. Jan. 17

4300 block of Seventh Avenue N: David Heath, 53, shot. Dorion Dillard and Cordaro Hardin charged with first-degree murder.

2. Jan. 17

3500 block of Seventh Avenue N: Jeff Shultz, 43, shot. Dillard and Hardin charged with first-degree murder.

3. March 8

3700 18th Ave. S:Frederick Love, 24, stabbed after an argument over a woman. Malcolm Danford, also 24, charged with second-degree murder.

4. March 24

2200 block of Highland Street S: Deandre "Squirrel" Brown, 15, shot after a brawl at Wildwood Recreation Center. Tyree Jamel Gland, 17, charged with second-degree murder. Raymond Adams, 18, charged with being a principal to the murder.

5. April 4

2635 Sixth St. S: Tracey Walker, 40, shot. No arrest.

6. April 14

2700 block of 20th Street S: Charles E. Williams, 25, shot. No arrest.

7. April 18

4100 block of 12th Avenue S: Ediesha Daniel, 17, shot. Charles Wilson, 20, the father of her baby, charged with first-degree murder.

8. May 27

1948 45th St. S: James Lasseter, 33, shot during a drug-related dispute. Christopher Taylor, 24, charged with first-degree murder.

9. May 27

6363 First Ave. S: James Chancey, 30, stabbed. Jonathan Welcher, 33, charged with second-degree murder.

10. May 27

1000 block of 13th Avenue S:Kurt Bryant shot. Marcus Oliver, 18, charged with first-degree murder.

11. June 15

834 53rd Ave. N: Ian Lawson, 23, shot. David Wilson, 24, who had just started to date Lawson's girlfriend, charged with first-degree murder.

12, 13. July 6

482 Dawson Ave. NE:Paula M. O'Conner, 37, and her 15-month-old son, Alijah, killed inside home. Paula dies of strangulation; Alijah dies of asphyxiation. No arrest.

14. July 12

1409 28th Ave. S: Amuel Murph, 68, shot with an assault rifle. No arrest.

15. July 19

2021 Queensboro Ave. S:Clifford Harris, 36, shot during drug-related dispute. Claudius "New York" Green, 51, charged with second-degree murder.

16. July 30

800 Jackson St. N, Apt. 2: Luyen Pham, 63, beaten and strangled. Long Phi Le, 20, charged with first-degree murder, home invasion.

17. Aug. 4

731 15th St. S:Jimmy Lee Adams, 34, shot. No arrest.

18. Sept. 3

3921 Ninth Ave. S: Mariama M. Williams, 31, stabbed. Ronald E. Williams, 42, victim's husband, charged with second-degree murder.

19. Sept. 4

2227 33rd St. S:Vinson Phillips, 46, shot. No arrest.

20. Sept. 6

47th Street and 16th Avenue S:Alfonso Williams, 35, shot while riding bicycle. No arrest.

21. Sept. 15

Fifth Avenue N and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street:Charles Cummings, 49, beaten. No arrest.

22. Sept. 19

776 1/2 16th Ave. S:Mandy Sampson, 27, shot. Home invasion/drug-related. No arrest.

23. Sept. 22

2500 block of 21st Street. S: Miguel Bell, 42, shot and dumped in an alley. No arrest.

24. Oct. 10

2581 Langdon Ave. S: Benjamin Philyor, 46, shot. No arrest.

My suggestion is to use the positive salary variance from the police being short staffed to hire contract staff to crack down on open drugs and drinking, littering, and speeding. It's the same lawless people. Southside looks like a 3rd world country!

I believe it'll get worse....the "theme" today seems to promote a dislike for law-enforcement. Police have to do what lousy parents don't do....enforce rules with consequences. We are reaping what we sow (bad tv,music, etc)
