WASHINGTON Mohamed ElBaradei, the director of the International Atomic Energy Agency, urged the Bush administration Sunday to soften its statements about Iran while maintaining diplomatic pressure to halt the nuclear enrichment that could lead to the production of a nuclear weapon. But U.S. lawmakers appearing on Sunday television talk programs were divided on whether efforts to influence Iran had been helped or hindered by the administration's tough talk, exemplified by President Bush's warning that if Tehran obtained a nuclear weapon it could lead to "World War III." Elsewhere Libya: Crippled by the absence of key rebel leaders, a highly anticipated Darfur peace conference in Libya was effectively postponed Sunday to give rebel delegates time to prepare before direct talks with the Sudanese government. Somalia: Hundreds of protesters demanding the departure of government-allied Ethiopian troops burned tires and threw stones Sunday in Mogadishu as some of the worst violence in months continued for a second day. India: Tens of thousands of impoverished Indians arrived in New Delhi on Sunday, ending a monthlong march to draw attention to the plight of those dispossessed of their land by economic development. Ukraine: The nation reburied 1,998 victims of Stalinist repression Sunday, paying respects to those killed by the Soviet secret police before World War II and dumped into a mass grave.
