Bowling will help get pediatric facility
Bowlers, sponsors and volunteers are needed for the benefit Bowl-A-Thon for the Our Baby RIA Foundation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Nov. 10 at Spring Hill Lanes, 3447 Commercial Way.
There will be prize giveaways for bowlers. Each bowler is asked to raise or donate at least $30. Teams of five players will play three games. Shoe rental is included.

Toys for Tots opens registration Nov. 13
Marine Corps League Detachment 708, sponsor for the Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program in Hernando County, will accept registrations for Toys for Tots from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays, Nov. 13-Dec. 17 at the Hernando County Fairgrounds, 6436 S Broad St.
The program is for children ages 6 months through 12 years. Parents or legal guardians must register in person and must bring proof of residency driver's license and current utility bill, and a birth certificate for each child.

Sheriff plans meeting for new homeowners
Hernando County Sheriff Richard Nugent and the Sheriff's Office will host a meeting and informal discussion for new homeowners at 6 p.m. Nov. 14 at the Emergency Communications Operation Center, 18900 Cortez Blvd.
Nugent will discuss the programs that his office offers to Hernando County residents.

City rec department to host Xbox tournament
The Brooksville Parks and Recreation Department will host a Madden '07 Xbox Tournament from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Nov. 24 at the Jerome Brown Community Center, 99 Jerome Brown Place.
The tournament is open to students in middle and high school.
This will be a double-elimination tournament, with awards given for first and second place in various age divisions. Registration is required by Nov. 16. The cost is $25 per participant.
Participants will be allowed to use their own controls after they are inspected. Controls will be available to rent, if necessary. Refreshments will be available for purchase.

Several fundraisers, craft shows in works
The following fundraising craft shows, flea markets and sales have been planned:
-Women's Fellowship of Spring Hill United Church of Christ will host its 25th annual arts and crafts bazaar festival, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 9 and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 10, 4244 Mariner Blvd., Spring Hill. The event will include handmade crafts, floral arrangements, Christmas ornaments and decorations, home-baked goods and hand-dipped chocolate candies. Food and drinks - such as walking tacos, hot dogs, bagels, sweet rolls, coffee, tea, soda and punch - will be available. Call 686-9286.
-The First United Methodist Church holiday bazaar and bake sale, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 9 and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 10, 109 S Broad St., Brooksville. There will be Christmas wreaths and decorations, hand-crafted children's clothing, American Girl doll clothing, quilted items, baked goods and plants. Lunch will be available for purchase on Nov. 9.
-Annual bazaar at Grace Presbyterian Church, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 10, in the fellowship hall, 8375 Spring Hill Drive, Spring Hill. There will be attic treasures, jewelry, hand-crafted Christmas ornaments, silk floral arrangements, live plants, knitted items and baked goods. Breakfast and lunch will be available. Proceeds will support the Mission Ministry of the Presbyterian Women of Grace Church.
-Spring Hill Garden Club/Nature Coast Botanical Gardens yard sale, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the gardens, 1489 Parker Ave., Spring Hill. The garden club's adjacent plant nursery will be open with a variety of plants available. Guided tours of the gardens will be offered at no cost. Donations will be appreciated. Funds raised will be used to maintain, promote, improve and expand the gardens. To donate items for the sale, call 683-9933.

Drug policy board seeks members
The Hernando County Commission is accepting applications from individuals interested in volunteering on the Hernando County Substance Abuse Policy Advisory Board.
The board is the primary body for coordinating drug abuse efforts undertaken with funds provided by the Anti-Drug Abuse Act of 1988. Terms on the board are indefinite.
To be considered, applicants must be Hernando County residents and registered voters.
Applications are available in the county administrator's office, Room 460, at the Hernando County Government Center, 20 N Main St., Brooksville. Completed applications must be returned no later than 5 p.m. Nov. 16. For information, call 754-4002.

All-breed dog show to be next weekend
The Hernando County Kennel Club will host an all-breed dog show Nov. 10 and 11 at Florida Classic Park, 5360 Lockhart Road, east of Brooksville.
Judging starts at 7 a.m. both days. A "B" match will be on Saturday, starting a half-hour after the "best in show" competition. A microchip clinic will be available from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days; the cost is $25.

Light a candle for Alzheimer victims
The Alzheimer's Family Organization will offer "Candles of Care," a candle-lighting event at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Forest Oaks of Spring Hill, 8055 Forest Oaks Blvd.
The event is to remember and honor those affected by Alzheimer's disease or a related illness, as part of National Commemorative Candle Lighting, an annual event sponsored by the Alzheimer's Foundation of America. For information, call Cheryl Benders at 683-3323.

Health care panel changes meeting date
Due to the Thanksgiving holiday, the Hernando County Health Care Advisory Board has changed the date of its meeting. The group will meet from 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday in the commission chambers at the Hernando County Government Center, 20 N Main St.
The 2008 officers will be elected and there will be a brief presentation on recent National Alliance on Mental Illness Hernando event.
