  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

It's a great weekend for all things vino in Safety Harbor.

The city will celebrate the sixth annual Safety Harbor Wine Festival from 5 to 11 p.m. Saturday.

Stroll along Main Street between Bayshore Boulevard and Eighth Avenue and sip wines from vineyards all over the world. Patrons can browse wares offered by arts and crafts vendors and sample food offered by local restaurants.

The event will also feature performances by local jazz, rock, blues and R&B bands, including Vibe, T. Foxx, David Bearce, Low Frequency Shaman and Angel for Blues.

Admission and parking are free. Wines will range from $3 to $5 per glass.

When you're ready for a break, step inside the Syd Entel Galleries, at 247 Main St., and view a collection of paintings by Thomas Arvid, a premier painter of fine wine.

The Georgia artist is known for his realistic, oversized still life compositions of wine and the rituals surrounding its consumption.

The gallery is open until 9 p.m. Saturday. About 30 of Arvid's pieces will be offered for sale, including an original painting. Prices start at $900.

"For such a young artist, he's really skyrocketed to the top of the art scene," said Linda Gagliostro, gallery manager. "He is well known not just locally but also among the vineyards in Napa Valley. That's why his work is so highly collectible."
