Today's Letters: Voters deserve clean elections

Re: Dunedin's upcoming election

I'm sick and tired of seeing our local elections end up as bar fights. Is winning at all cost the mantra for certain Dunedin incumbents?

We need to develop a voters bill of rights, ensuring voters that each candidate will not resort to dirty tricks, innuendos and mudslinging. It's time to stand tall and not accept or vote for any candidate who falsely attacks others. Win on your own ethics, morals and ability to help this city.

Let's send out the message loud and clear. We're not going to take it anymore. Send your e-mails and letters to our commissioners. Tell them, if it's not going to be clean, we're going to clean them out!

Bill Coleman, Dunedin

We had many reasons to smile

Recently the Military Officers Association of America, Clearwater chapter, held a golf tournament at Cove Cay Country Club for the purpose of creating a scholarship fund for the JRROTC students at Clearwater High School and a military appreciation day for active duty members.

I wish we could list the names of every person who contributed to this successful venture, but this community, including many businesses, the media and private citizens, came together and donated hundreds of dollars, gift certificates and sponsorships totaling nearly $4,000.

We had more than 80 players and many people came just to have lunch, so our party brought out about 100 people, including several active-duty members from MacDill Air Force Base who were sponsored by chapter members and different residents in the community.

There was a 70 percent prediction of rain on the day of the tournament, but the day was overcast and the sun came out just as most people were coming in. There really is a golf god, apparently - it turned out to be a perfect day.

So thank you again, Pinellas County and MOAA National, which started us off with $500.

Sue Morse, editor, Clearwater chapter of MOAA

For our climate, please Step It Up

Step It Up is a national day of climate action. In April, we had our first event, which hundreds of people attended. The April Step It Up rally in Largo was one event out of thousands across the nation, and our goal is to participate in the national day of action again. The goal is to call on Congress to reduce global warming pollution 80 percent by 2050.

This second event, Step It Up Part Two - Who's a Leader?, gives us a chance to hear from our local leaders about how they are working to preserve Florida's future. Our event will feature talks by Largo Mayor Pat Gerard, as well as the chairman of the state Senate Energy Committee, Sen. Mike Bennett.

The event will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Solar Source, 10840 Endeavour Way, Largo.

It is a chance to hear from local leaders on their plans to protect Florida's future. Educational information will be available on all types of solar systems - solar thermal (for your hot water heater) and solar electricity (also known as PV or photovoltaic). Did you know that installing one solar water heater on your home is the emission equivalent of taking a car off the road?

There will be live entertainment by Helen Daniels.

Let's show our numbers to Congress. Please wear a blue shirt and join us for a group photo at noon. As we did in April, we will send that photo to all of our representatives in Congress to let them know that Florida citizens want action on global warming

Register for the event at: http://events.stepitup2007.org/november/events/show/2495

If man is so omnipotent that we can create global warming, then why is it we cannot stop natural events like hurricanes, tornados, earthquakes, floods etc.? Mother nature is by far more potent than we will ever be.

The sad fact about the warming of our planet is, while we all are sitting around trying to figure out the cause - It IS happening. Why do we still build on the coast, re-build New Orleans, NOT recycle, etc? Lets listen to the planet and take action.

even if global warming pollution were reduced 80% in this country, it would be offset by increasing pollution from china, india, africa, etc. and what can congress do about global warming from deforestation in brazil, and global bovine emissions?
