ST. PETERSBURG - Steve Swindal, who used to be George Steinbrenner's son-in-law and the anointed successor to take over the New York Yankees, pleaded no contest Thursday to a driving-under-the-influence charge that marked the end of his career among baseball royalty. Swindal, 53, who did not attend the hearing, was sentenced to 12 months of probation and 50 hours of community service. He also will lose his driver's license for six months, pay $720 in fines and costs, attend DUI school and undergo alcohol abuse intervention. Swindal was arrested Feb. 15 in the 1300 block of 31st Street S because he was driving 61 mph in a 35 mph zone. At the time, Swindal was married to Steinbrenner's daughter, Jennifer, and was a general partner of the New York Yankees. He oversaw all areas of the club's business and baseball operations and was a member of Major League Baseball's ownership committee. Soon after the arrest, Swindal and Jennifer filed for divorce and he left the Yankees organization. Times researcher Angie Drobnic Holan contributed to this report.
