Soccer: Seffner Chr. moves to semifinals with 2OT win

TAMPA - Seffner Christian isn't exactly a stranger to winning.
After all, the Cougars have won three of the past four Class A, District 3 fall soccer championships. It was just getting through the region tournament that proved to be a problem.
So when Seffner Christian topped Community School of Naples 2-1 in double overtime in regionals, not only did it earn the Cougars their first trip to the state semifinal, it got them past their perennial roadblock.
"We feel like we have some momentum and we are in a good state of mind," Seffner Christian coach Mark Canterbury said. "The team is in good spirits and we're unified."
Seffner Christian (23-3) faces host Lake Worth Trinity Christian today at 4. The winner takes on the Montverde-North Miami Beach Hillel winner in the state final Saturday.
The Cougars will be without senior defender Mark Sentovich (knee) and senior midfielder Robert Bull (hip flexor). But in speedy scoring leader Steven Cunningham and goalkeeper Steven Bush's sub-one goal per game average, Canterbury is confident in his squad.
Plus, a win in the semifinal could give the Cougars another shot at Montverde, which handed Seffner Christian two of its three losses this season.
"I think our kids will step up and realize it's up to them," Canterbury said. "There's no two or three players that do it all for us. This is a great group on and off the field. We really are a team, and that's our whole approach to the game."
