What's a three technique?
By GREG AUMAN, Times Staff Writer
Published November 2, 2007
Sophomore Aaron Harris lines up at what USF calls the "three technique" tackle, so named for the conventionally numbered gap the player lines up against (USF actually identifies its gaps with letters). Also known as an "under tackle," a three-technique tackle lines up opposite the outside shoulder of a guard and shoots that gap between guard and tackle to put pressure on the quarterback, combining a tackle's size and an end's speed. It's a position most associated with former Bucs star Warren Sapp, but also current Bears star Tommie Harris.
