ST. PETERSBURG - There may not have been any playoff spots on the line when St. Petersburg faced off against Seminole Friday night. But nobody told the coaches and players that this game didn't mean anything.
Emotions ran high from the start of the game as the Green Devils extended their late season surge Friday night celebrating Homecoming with their third consecutive victory.
"We got on a roll to late in the season," St. Pete Head Coach Joe Fabrizio said. "I wish we could have played like this earlier."
The Green Devil defense was the story of the night, surrendering only 112 yards of total offense to the Warhawks. Seminole was able to score a late touchdown to prevent the shutout.
"A shutout is always the goal of the defense," Fabrizio said. "We just came up a little bit short."
Fabrizio dug into his bag of tricks early, calling for a fake punt that turned into a 41-yard touchdown pass from Brandon Livrago to Dondre Davis. Devon Papendrew kicked the PAT.
"We have been working on that all year and it was finally the situation to do it," Fabrizio said. "Double D (Davis) keeps making plays."
After a Warhawk punt pinned the Green Devils at their own seven, Dontrell Townsend broke a 28 yard run that was followed by a 46 yard run by Mike Wilson. The drive ended with a Papendrew 33 yard field goal to make the score 10-0.
"It's nice to finally have them healthy," Fabrizio said. "They both were banged up in the beginning of the season and now they are showing what they're capable of."
Papendrew added a 22-yard field goal just before the half to give St. Petersburg a 13-0 lead.
St. Petersburg put the game away with a nine yard touchdown run from Lorenzo Arscott.
"Coach Fabrizio does a good job with those guys over there," Warhawk coach Sam Roper said. "If we could get some offense we would do better in these games."
Sophomore Austin Cowan came in for the Warhawks and led their only touchdown drive, finishing it off with a three yard run. Seminole converted the two point conversion to get the final score.
