TAMPA - Brad Richards generally does not seek publicity for his charitable work; his suite at the St. Pete Times Forum that every game is open to pediatric cancer patients and their families is an off-the-radar success.
But Friday's christening of the Brad Richards Foundation was another story.
"It's good to come out and get it recognized," the Lightning's star center said at the Times Forum. "We want to get it out there so people understand what it's about and can get on board."
Richy's Rascals Suite Escape is still the foundation's primary program, but two other initiatives were announced.
Task Force 19 Richards wears No. 19 is for military appreciation and recognition. Its first event: a Thanksgiving dinner at Tampa Palms Golf & Country Club for selected soldiers and their families.
Richy's Hot Shots focuses on youth hockey. Each month, beginning immediately, area coaches can nominate players from which three will receive a grant to pay for the next season's travel or hockey expenses.
"Why wouldn't you want to make a difference in people's lives when you can?" Richards said. "I get a chance to do that with what I do, so I might as well take advantage."
The foundation's Web site is bradrichardsfoundation.org.
