BROOKSVILLE
The Army Corps of Engineers will begin the final stage of its Phase 2 cleanup of the former Brooksville Turret Gunnery Range on Monday. The work involves digging in areas identified by geophysical mapping to remove and properly dispose of any potential explosives of concern. Residents affected are in the general area of Weeping Willow Street, along Pinewood Avenue, Pine Cone Street and the north side of Greenwood Street. The cleanup is under the Military Munitions Response Program initiative of the Defense Environmental Restoration Program for Formerly Used Defense Sites and is aimed at cleaning up properties that were owned, occupied or under the jurisdiction of the Department of Defense before 1986. The gunnery range west of Brooksville was used during World War II, and cleanup has been under way for several years.
