Former sheriff to pay $46,000 to IRS

FORT LAUDERDALE - Broward County's former sheriff has agreed to pay about $46,000 in back taxes, interest and penalties to the Internal Revenue Service, federal court records show.
The payments stem from Ken Jenne's guilty plea in September to tax evasion and wire fraud conspiracy for accepting thousands of dollars in hidden payments and favors while sheriff. Jenne resigned in disgrace on Sept. 4 after a nine-year tenure as sheriff.
Jenne, 60, also a former Democratic state senator, disclosed his IRS obligations for 1998 to 2006 in a filing that challenges parts of a probation report prepared for his Nov. 16 sentencing. He is facing 18 to 24 months in prison.
A large part of the back taxes relate to his purchase of a 1994 Mercedes convertible from his former Fort Lauderdale law firm, Conrad, Scherer & Jenne, for $61,297 in 1997.
The firm agreed to finance the purchase and pay the insurance. It continued to make payments that totaled about $110,000 even after then-Gov. Lawton Chiles appointed Jenne as sheriff the next year. Jenne never reported the payments on his tax returns or state financial disclosure forms.
He also failed to report gifts and consulting fees received from sheriff's contractors, according to the filing.
Jenne is not challenging the potential length of his sentence. But Jenne does claim the report erroneously blames him for actions taken by subordinates. He also argues that he never used the car he received from the law firm.
