Truck fire chokes I-75 for hours

TAMPA - A semitrailer truck fire halted rush hour traffic for hours on Interstate 75 northbound Wednesday. According to Florida Highway Patrol, the fire began shortly before 5 p.m. as the driver of the truck approached the Fletcher Avenue on-ramp and heard a loud pop. Warchal Krzysztof, 48, of Toronto pulled over immediately, then saw smoke billowing from his tractor. Despite Krzysztof's attempts to put out the fire, the flames spread rapidly and the truck became fully engulfed. Fire crews from Temple Terrace, Tampa and Hillsborough County responded and brought the fire under control. No one was injured, but the cleanup took hours and traffic remained clogged late into the night. Florida Highway Patrol Lt. Bruce Dorus said part of the delay came from draining the truck of fuel before moving it. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
