CLEARWATER - Wednesday was a half-day for Countryside High School students and after classes let out, sophomore Anthony Remon and three buddies hopped on their bikes.

The teens were pedaling north on the sidewalk beside U.S. 19, making their way from one friend's house to another.

At the intersection of U.S. 19 and Enterprise Road, they cut across the empty eastbound lanes of Enterprise near Chick-fil-A.

Traffic heading west on Enterprise had stopped for a red light, and Remon cut through the two lines of stationary westbound vehicles, police said.

But in the right-turn lane, traffic was still moving, and Remon was hit by a four-door green Mercury Sable driven by William Henry Meier, 51, of Clearwater. Meier was moving to turn right to go north on U.S. 19 when the accident occurred at 1:39 p.m.

The impact crushed in the glass of Meier's passenger-side windshield. Remon was flown to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg with life-threatening injuries. Police said his condition was critical Wednesday evening. Remon was transferred to All Children's Hospital, but no further information about his condition was available.

No charges have been filed against Meier, whose view was obstructed by blocked traffic, police said.

"At this point, it looks like the bicyclist violated the right of way," said Clearwater police spokeswoman Elizabeth Daly-Watts.

Remon is the second 14-year-old boy in a week to be hit and critically injured while riding his bicycle in Clearwater.

On Friday, Matthew R. Hanna of Largo suffered brain injuries when he was hit while riding on Franklin Street at Hillcrest Avenue. Like Remon, Hanna was not wearing a helmet.

The real sad thing is I am very surpised that this doesn't happen as often as it does. I see children on bikes in traffic with no care of traffic laws and I see drivers not looking for these children in traffic. Let this be a wake up call to all.

i go to countryside high school and it is very sad to hear that everyday someone from our school get's hit or killed by someone..and it is very dangerous to ride your bike on a busy road..people should learn not to do that anymore...
