  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

The International Chili Society will hold Chili Blast 2007, its Florida championship, at Coachman Park overlooking Clearwater Harbor.

The free event runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and, like an Ironman triathlon, features competition in three events: traditional red, chili verde and salsa.

The competition has drawn nearly 50 cooks - all members of the International Chili Society - from Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Colorado, Ohio, Illinois, New Jersey, Connecticut and Massachusetts.

Winners are scheduled to be announced at 3:30 p.m., and the winner in each category will advance to the 2008 World Championship Chili Cookoff and a chance to win $25,000.

The Chili Blast will feature music, activities for kids and, of course, chili samples.

Call (727) 781-6330 or visit www.floridachili.com.

We here at the Times salute the superior physical fitness embodied by the triathletes in the Ford Ironman World Championship 70.3 on Saturday. But we can't turn down a good bowl of chili or excellent glass of wine, either. That's why we want to direct your attention to two of Saturday's more mellow events.

The 17th annual Wines the Blues festival in downtown Dunedin will feature the best of local restaurants, beer, wine and music.

The festival runs from 5-11 p.m. Saturday on Main Street between Louden Avenue and Broadway.

At Pioneer Park, at Main and Douglas Avenue, musical acts will include:

- Eric Lindell, a New Orleans-schooled singer-songwriter and roots rocker.

- Al "Coffee" McDaniel, whose "new school soul music" combines R&B, blues, neo-soul and jazz melodies with modern urban beats.

- Wendy and the Soul Shakers, a blues-rock band led by Wendy Rich that has been a Tampa Bay area favorite since the early 1990s.

The event is free.

You'll need to show a photo ID to buy beer or wine at the event. Food, art and crafts will be for sale.

Call (727) 733-3197.
