  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

NIGHTSTAND: David Brown

We talked to bookseller David Brown who, with his wife, Ellen, opened Old Tampa Book Co. 10 years ago. The downtown storefront at 507 Tampa St. holds 30,000 titles, including used, rare and out-of-print books.

What is on your nightstand?

I'm just about to start Of Love and Other Demons by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, and I just finished Sarum: The Novel of England by Edward Rutherfurd.

Sarum has more than 900 pages. Do you recommend it?

It consumed a lot of time, but it is a good history of the Salisbury Cathedral and Southern England.

Do you and your wife ever have differing opinions on book choices?

We've been married for 48 years, and I don't think we've ever argued over the merit of a book. But sometimes we have trouble with audio books. We were on a road trip recently, and she didn't want to listen to an audio of a Patricia Cornwell book. So, I finished it myself, on my daily commute.
