To mark Veterans Day, three recent books look at the courage and sacrifices of those who fight our wars.

The Day of Battle: The War in Sicily and Italy, 1943-44 (Henry Holt) by Rick Atkinson follows the author's Pulitzer-winning An Army at Dawn in dramatically recreating the epic struggles of World War II.

Letters on the Wall: Offerings and Remembrances From the Vietnam Veterans Memorial (Smithsonian) by Michael Sofarelli is a collection of photographs of proud and heartbreaking missives left by families, fellow soldiers and grateful strangers.

Long Road Home: A Story of War and Family (Penguin Group) by Martha Raddatz follows soldiers of the 1st Cavalry through a deadly 2004 firefight in Baghdad's Sadr City - and the families back home in Texas awaiting word of their fates.
