Captain's Corner

Cooler weather: Summerlike weather has finally been replaced with a flow of cold fronts. Plan your trips around each push of northern air since strong winds and high seas are inevitable. Between foul weather, anglers can capitalize on the migrations working their way toward us from the upper gulf. Kings, Spanish mackerel, cobia, grouper, tarpon and others can be taken. Big macks: Kingfishing has started to peak. Expect more to come with every shot of cold air. Offshore wrecks hold big kingfish. Many tournaments have been won around a variety of wrecks. Along the beaches, big kings could be produced .When the water gets muddy, the sharks often take over. Most are black tips ranging from 20-50 pounds. Big kings love to hang around any kind of structure. Ledges, sunken boats, deep channels and bell buoys straight out of the passes can produce a whopper. Bottom fishing: We've been having great success with the gag groupers in depths of 40-50 feet. This has been one of the best inshore grouper bites in years. Healthy water condition showing no signs of red tide is the reason. Dave Mistretta captains the Jaws Too out of Indian Rocks Beach. Call 727 595-3276, e-mail jawstoo@msn.com or see jawstoo.com.
