FORT LAUDERDALE - Willie Rose caught a touchdown and two-point conversion in the fourth as Florida Atlantic rallied to beat Arkansas State 34-31.
The win keeps the Owls in contention for the Sun Belt title and accompanying berth in the New Orleans Bowl. They must win at Florida International on Nov. 24 and at first-place Troy on Dec. 1.
Down 31-20, Rose turned a screen pass into a 56-yard score with 9:57 left. After a three-and-out, FAU drove 74 yards on 16 plays over 6:02, capped by DiIvory Edgecomb's 6-yard touchdown catch with 2:49 left. The Owls converted four third downs during the drive, including Chris Bonner's 22-yard catch on third and 15. Rose's two-point conversion made it 34-31.
Arkansas State reached the FAU 47 before a third-down sack and fourth-down incompletion.
Bethune-Cookman 37, Howard 26: Jimmie Russell did not complete a pass in five attempts but ran for three touchdowns and 141 of the visiting Wildcats' 420 yards. Phillip Kirkland added 124 yards and Justin Brannon 85.
Hampton 30, FAMU 15: Jeremy Gilchrist returned two punts for scores for the host Pirates. An 86-yarder put Hampton ahead 7-3 late in the first quarter, and a 57-yarder made it 20-6 late in the second quarter.
Jacksonville 24, Butler 16: Chris Horton passed for 206 yards and two touchdowns for the host Dolphins. He hit Geavon Tribble for a 70-yard score 55 seconds in. The Bulldogs fumbled on the ensuing series, and Rudell Small's 4-yard run made it 14-0. And up 24-16, Nobel Robson and James Mills had interceptions over the final seven minutes to help seal it.
