Let's talk about the role of coaches, youth sports

The Azalea Bulldogs youth football program in St. Petersburg has drawn negative attention for a dispute involving coaches with criminal records. But such off-field problems are not limited to this one program.
Conflicts of all kinds are on the rise. That's why the Boys Initiative of Tampa Bay will hold community conversations today and Wednesday about the role of coaches and harnessing the power of youth sports. Call (813) 514-9555 for more information.

A coalition of government entities, civic activists, youth groups and preachers launched an innovative approach to combating youth crime in Childs Park and other south St. Petersburg neighborhoods last week. The effort aims to get kids off the street by providing athletic and entertainment activities, and culminates with a Jan. 26 block party, basketball tournament and talent show.
Maybe some day the headlines for grass roots crime prevention efforts will be as big as the headlines for crimes. Maybe not....
Florida House Minority Leader Dan Gelber gives a new political group in Tampa something to crow about.
Gelber speaks to the Democratic Professionals Council at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday in Mise En Place. Cost for lunch is $25.
The council, with chapters across the state, wants to engage more professionals in politics. Getting Gelber is a good start....
I wish the Bucs would break out a unique alternative uniform for a game. Or better yet, break out the old Creamsicle orange and have a throwback Sunday.

Ì've personally felt the threat of an Azalea Youth Coach when I (innocently) send his wife an email, just complimenting her with her appearance!
