Many expect Plant to have one of the area's top girls basketball teams this fall.
Now we know why.
Behind 17 points each from Caitlyn Ostroski and Michelle Taylor, the Panthers built an early lead Tuesday, then iced things later at the foul line in a 50-42 season-opening win at Bloomingdale. Paris Moore led Bloomingdale (0-1) with 22 points.
Plant led from the start and built a 14-point halftime lead.
The Bulls made things interesting down the stretch and at one point closed to within six.
- East Bay 56, Robinson 5
Freshman Layla Johnson led a balanced Indians attack with 11 points. Everyone on the East Bay team scored as the Indians improved to 1-0.
"I'm pleased," East Bay coach Terry Varvil said. "We're a very young team. We've only got one senior. For us to move the ball around and for everybody to get a chance to play and score, that's a big improvement for us from last year."
Boys Soccer
- Bishop McLaughlin 8, Carrollwood Day School 0
At Bishop McLaughlin, the Hurricanes got three goals from senior forward Matt Gronau as they improved to 1-0. Gronau added two assists.
Five other players scored.
Freshman Matt Gulau contributed two assists.
"It was a good start to the season," Bishop McLaughlin coach John Mayer said. "We started off a little sluggishly trying to get our legs. But once we started rolling, everything came into place with a lot of good passing combinations."
- Sickles 1, Countryside 1
At Sickles, sophomore defender Gil Davis scored in the 89th minute off a corner kick, which allowed his team to draw even. In extra time, Sickles keeper Brandon Stout had a dramatic save that secured the tie.
"We are an extremely young team," Sickles coach Tony Calvo said. "In a tough district match, the boys today played really hard. We dominated about 70 percent of the game."
Sickles is 2-1-2.
Girls Soccer
- Countryside 1, Sickles 0
Freshman striker Michelle Primiani notched the winner with about 10 minutes to play as Countryside (5-0, 2-1) opened the district slate with a win against host Sickles (2-1, 0-1). Countryside keeper Christina Brabson made five saves to notch her fifth shutout in as many matches.
