UT wins opener in region volleyball

TAMPA - The Tampa volleyball team began its title defense with a 3-0 victory Thursday over South Carolina-Aiken in the opening round of the Division II South Region.
Erin Clark had a team-high 15 kills. The nation's leader in hitting percentage also helped her cause with a .682 mark for the night.
In other region games, Saint Leo couldn't hold on against Florida Southern, which erased a 2-1 deficit to win 25-30, 30-18, 19-30, 30-25, 15-4. Eckerd also had an early exit, losing to Lynn 30-24, 30-23, 28-30, 30-27.
All-SSC honors: Four Tampa players were named to the All-Sunshine State Conference first team: middle blocker Erin Clark, outside hitter Katelen Dixon, middle blocker Alisha Green and defensive specialist Margeaux Sinibaldi. Clark was also named SSC player of the year. Eckerd outside hitter Lydee Benoit and Saint Leo setter Michelle Nogueras also took first-team honors. Complete team, 11C.
HCC loses: Hillsborough Community College fell to Western Nebraska Community College 30-25, 32-30, 30-26 in early round action at the National Junior College Athletic Association championships in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Hillsborough (32-7) faces Temple today.
Men's soccer
Bulls' conference honors: Five USF players earned Big East honors: Kevon Neaves (first team); Simon Schoendorf, Yohance Marshall and Jordan Seabrook (second team); and Bernardo Anor (third team).
Swimming
Gator grabs award: Florida's Clark Burckle was named CollegeSwimming.com's Division I national swimmer of the week. He also was named the SEC male swimmer of the week.
Football
Penn State: Defensive tackle Chris Baker and backup linebacker Navarro Bowman were charged with assault over a campus fight in which police said a man was kicked and punched. Baker and Bowman were arraigned on charges including felony aggravated assault and two misdemeanors, simple assault and disorderly conduct.
Louisville: Defensive end Deantwan "Peanut" Whitehead's career has ended due to a spinal condition that showed up after an injury in last week's loss to West Virginia. He was diagnosed with congenital cervical spinal stenosis, a narrowing of the spinal column around the spinal cord.
