Poll finds 56% for amendment
By Times Staff Writer
Published November 16, 2007
A new poll shows 56 percent of voters support the Legislature's property tax cut plan that will be on the Jan. 29 ballot. That is 4 points short of the 60 percent needed for passage, but 22 percent of voters remain undecided, according to the Mason-Dixon poll, conducted for the Orlando Sentinel and other papers. The poll is similar to one done for the St. Petersburg Times, which showed 53 percent approval and a similar number of undecided voters. The tax cut proposal includes doubling the homestead exemption (though the effect is more like $15,000 because school taxes are not included); Save Our Homes portability; and a 10 percent assessment cap for nonhomestead property.

It also does nothing for first time home buyers. Vote NO and make Charlie Crist live up to his promise.

I'm voting No on this amendment. It does nothing to help newcomers to the state, who must pay exorbitant property taxes many times what their neighbors pay. SOH is an unfair, economically unsound system that will just get worse; it should be repealed
