Cancer patient benefit event slated today

A benefit for Nancy Holley Szwec will be today, starting about 11 a.m., at the Connection Bar, 18640 Cortez Blvd. Szwec, a longtime Hernando County resident, has been diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of cancer. The benefit will include a barbecue dinner, raffles, auction and other activities. A concert featuring EMP will start at 2 p.m. For information, call Connection owner Jack Solomon at 799-6468.
Habitat to dedicate its 27th home
Habitat for Humanity of Hernando County invites the public to a dedication service for its 27th home at 9 a.m. today at 16114 Boca Raton St., which is in Tangerine Estates off California Street. After the service, tours of the home will be provided, and light refreshments will be served.
Iraq War protest scheduled today
The Naturecoast Coalition for Peace and Justice will conduct an antiwar demonstration from 10 to 11:30 a.m. today at the southeast corner of Cortez Boulevard and Commercial Way. The peace group will continue its public protest of the Iraq War.
Roaring '20s series to wrap up today
Academia Hernando will present its final lecture in a series on the Roaring '20s from 10 a.m. to noon Monday at Nativity Lutheran Church, 6363 Commercial Way. University of South Florida professor Tamara Zwick will discuss "Storm Clouds Ahead: The Depression at Home and the Rise of Fascism Abroad." The cost is $7. For information, call 796-2855.
