Armwood continued its perfect season thanks to a stifling defense and a high-powered running game (42 carries, 293 yards), cruising to a 27-6 victory over Lake Region in the Class 4A state playoffs.

Armwood will host Hillsborough, a 42-7 winner over Auburndale, at 7:30 p.m. next Friday in the second round.

A Lake Region fumble at its own 29 set up the Hawks' first score, a 4-yard run by Mywan Jackson.

Armwood extended its lead to 14-0 in the second quarter on Matt Eastman's 1-yard dive. A 35-yard keeper by Jackson, followed by a 30-yard pass from Jackson to Eric Smith, set up Eastman's score.

Jackson added his second rushing touchdown in the third quarter, this one from 2 yards out for a 20-0 lead.

Lake Region capitalized on several Armwood penalties for it's only scoring drive of the night, capped by an 8-yard pass from Matt Hopkins to Ronnie Richardson.

But the Hawks ended any chance of a comeback on Smith's 15-yard touchdown run midway through the fourth quarter. Smith led all rushers with 144 yards on 14 carries.

Armwood's game was not without its problems, however, getting hit with 17 penalties for 165 yards.
