Defense leads CCC to shutout win
Crescent City (10-1) had a perfect record and nearly 3,000 fans in the stands for its Class 2B region semifinal against Clearwater Central Catholic.
But the Marauders had something better: a tougher schedule.
CCC (7-4) played four teams that made the playoffs in the regular season. It showed as the Marauders won 23-0.
"I guess it pays off to play a lot of strong teams during the season," Marauders coach Mike Jalazo said.
CCC's defense was key. The Marauders allowed just 51 total yards of offense and forced five turnovers. Defensive lineman Kyle Rettig wreaked havoc all night, reaching double digits in tackles for CCC.
Anthony Cochran scored twice on 1-yard runs and Mike Hasley recovered a fumble for a touchdown. Jeff Ijjas added a 32-yard field goal. CCC travels to Frostproof (8-3) next Friday in a rematch of a regular-season game won by Frostproof 47-7.
"We were pretty fired up to begin with, and when Crescent City wouldn't let us film from the end zone, that fired us up even more," Jalazo said. "We were pretty pleased with how we played defense."
