BROOKSVILLE - Since Nature Coast began its varsity program, the Sharks have not lost to another Hernando County school. The winning streak was stretched to 28 games Friday night.

A trip to Hernando resulted in a 46-34 victory for the Sharks.

The score did not tell the whole story as Nature Coast (3-0) pulled away in the second quarter. The game was a slugfest early, with the first quarter ending 8-4 in favor of the Sharks.

"We have been starting slow this season," Nature Coast coach Travis Lamle said. "When our guards can't get the ball inside to our post players, our offense seems to struggle."

Shooting guard Cherikhan Waddy took over for the Sharks after the team's slow start. The senior finished with a game-high 23 points. And she was a key defensively with a team-high eight rebounds and four steals.

"It's a huge luxury having someone like Waddy to lean on," Lamle said. "She can really do it all when we need her to."

Hernando (0-2) made it close in the final quarter by beginning the period on an 11-2 run. The Leopards' size in the paint was a huge factor in their ability to keep it close.

Senior power forward April Griffey, who has a history of success against Nature Coast, led the team with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
