Dr. Cynthia Stroup has opened Animal Hospital of West Bay at 2402 West Bay Drive.

The 38-year-old veterinarian has been practicing 11 years, most recently at Tampa Bay Veterinary Emergency Service in Largo. She lives in Clearwater with husband, Jack, who works in real estate, 2-year-old twin sons and 4-year-old daughter. The family also has a Labrador retriever, dachshund and kitten.

When did you decide to become a veterinarian?

My parents tell me that ever since they can remember I would say I want to be an animal doctor. For a time, I was interested in wildlife biology and management, but veterinary medicine has always been No. 1 with me. It was always my goal. I worked with veterinarians while in high school and as an undergraduate in college to get clinical experience.

What is your educational background?

I received a doctor of veterinary medicine from the University of Florida in Gainesville and completed an internship in medicine and surgery at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va. My special interests are in geriatrics and dermatology.

Why did you decide to start your own practice?

When you work for other people, you realize you can't make certain decisions regarding the care of patients. You can't be your own boss. And you're limited to what medications you can use and the equipment at hand.

What services are provided at the hospital?

Routine health examinations, vaccinations, X-ray services, dental care, surgery and hospitalized treatment, radiology, geriatric care, wellness and preventive medicine, microchip implants, heartworm and flea control, inhouse blood work, dietary and nutritional counseling, natural pet foods and supplies for cats and dogs.

News of businesses and business people can be faxed to Largo works at 445-4119, e-mailed to cosdon@sptimes.com or mailed to Largo Works, 710 Court St., Clearwater, FL 33756. We are interested in new and unusual businesses and expansions.
