They aren't all model-perfect
By Times Staff Writer

It is as venerable a feature in newspapers as the crossword. For photographers, an assignment with about as much prestige as covering the winning kumquat at the state fair. And yet, if you want to make a difference in the life of one animal and one person (or maybe a whole family), taking the Pet of the Week photo is almost a sure bet. Since 1999, Times photographer Ken Helle has handled nearly every Hillsborough Pet of the Week, which runs most Saturdays inside the Tampa & State section. With a few funny noises, a treat or sometimes the feather-on-a-stick he carries in his trunk, Helle has polished a knack for cajoling moments infused with expression and character from these pet wannabes. In the process of making a good photo for publication, he also clicks many a pet blooper. Not always the "adopt me" image he strives for, but pretty darn funny and a hit back at the office. Can a dog's ears be that big? One cat is caught mid-sneeze. Another looks like he ate a few canaries, and maybe another cat as well. Enjoy them; we did.
