Mark World AIDS Day with better awareness

For World AIDS Day, the Hernando County Health Department and Wal-Mart will provide HIV education and testing on from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 1 at the Wal-Mart Supercenter at 1485 Commercial Way. Health service representatives Laura A. Dunn and Joan D. Felix-Sepulveda will discuss prevention and management. Sheriff's Traffic Unit to set up DUI checkpoint
Nov. 30, the Hernando County Sheriff's Traffic Unit will conduct a DUI checkpoint from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. on Northcliffe Boulevard near Portillo Road. Deputies will look for drivers suspected of driving under the influence. A zero tolerance is in effect; arrests will be made of anyone detected to be driving while impaired. Call Sgt. Garden Club schedules poinsettia planting
The Spring Hill Garden Club Poinsettia Planting is from 9 a.m. to noon Dec. 8 at the Waterfall Entrance at Spring Hill Drive and Commercial Way. Area residents are invited to bring poinsettias, sign a memory book and have garden club members plant the poinsettias around the waterfall. The event began 19 years ago when club member Don Kubiak planted poinsettias at the waterfall in memory of his parents. Call 683-9933.

Academia Hernando offers jazz concert
To conclude its lecture series on the Roaring '20s, Academia Hernando will offer a jazz concert with Southern Exposure at 10 a.m. Monday at Nativity Lutheran Church, 6363 Commercial Way, Weeki Wachee. Free to Academia Hernando subscribers. All others pay $10. Call 796-2855.

Mail carriers set to collect for Toys for Tots
The U.S. Postal Service letter carriers will be collecting new, unwrapped toys Dec. 1 for the Toys for Tots program. Residents can leave toys in bags or boxes by their mailboxes. Call 796-3666.

Holiday celebration set at youth shelter
The Hernando County Alliance Members and Friends of Alliance Members will host a Holiday Celebration and Benefit Brunch from 10 a.m. to noon Dec. 3 at the New Beginning Youth Shelter, 18377 Clinton Road, off Truck Bypass 50 behind the sheriff's office.
Bring a donation for the shelter's youth. Gift suggestions include gift certificates to the Beacon movie theater, or pizza or bowling certificates.
The shelter houses youth from ages 10 to 17. Good, used clothing for children in this age range are appreciated.

Cocktail hour will start at 4 p.m., with dinner served at 5 p.m. and dancing until 8:30 p.m. The menu choice is roast turkey or roast beef. Music will be provided by Take Two.
