The sweet - and occasionally not so sweet - sound of piano music filled the Music Gallery last weekend during the Upper Pinellas Music Teachers Association annual festival.

The two-day event featured 13 recitals and 242 piano students, according to Susan Mariscal, the event's chairwoman.

"Everything seemed to go very smoothly," she said.

The event is not competitive, although all students are evaluated by a judge who gave them each a comment sheet with constructive criticism. Every student also received a small trophy, Mariscal said. This year's theme was 20th century composers, including Bartok and Rachmaninoff. "Our goal was for them to expand their repertoires," Mariscal said. "It's a real encouragement to them to accomplish something like this."
