Dunedin a place to be thankful for

Thanksgiving is a time for family and reflection. I consider Dunedin my home and extended family.

I'm thankful to Dunedin:

For giving me a safe and secure town to raise my family.

For giving my family a city government that cares about its residents.

For being progressive and proactive.

For keeping the ambiance and small-town feel of Dunedin.

For keeping more city-sponsored events than the city really wants.

For the city's sanitation department, which picks up old sofas and refrigerators.

For the city's decision to contract the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office to protect us.

For the dedicated city commissioners, who give their talents and open themselves up for endless criticism, but keep being good stewards of our city.

For the city employees, who do their jobs, realizing it's a professional career.

Thanks for the new library, the new Community Center, the William Hale Center, the reclaimed water, the refurbished waterfront park, Pioneer Park and many more investments to make our life better.

I'm thankful to call Dunedin my home.

Bill Coleman, Dunedin

Give bicyclists a way off the road

It seems to me a simple way to eliminate most of the many deaths and injuries our area has experienced would be to change the existing law to allow bicyclists to use sidewalks, when available, giving way to pedestrians, when encountered. Most sidewalks are lightly used.

It would also make sense to standardize the stop signs at crossings on the Pinellas Trail. They are not consistent. Some have stop signs for motorists and some do not. It would be better and safer to have them one way or the other. Many crossings have only occasional bicyclists or walkers.

Turn off the TV, try the theater

What fun it was to be at the Francis Wilson Playhouse in Clearwater recently to view The Bells Are Ringing. As the audience left the theater, many of them were singing The Party's Over as they were greeted by the engaging cast of 26.

What I personally enjoyed was seeing the many young people in the audience who were constantly clapping and cheering .

With other great shows - Cabaret at the Eight O'Clock Theatre in Largo and Camelot with James Demetrius in Tarpon Springs - it is time for people to turn off their televisions for a night out. It is wonderful to be entertained by live presentations.

Pinellas County is doing itself proud with these local theater presentations. You might want to give these box offices a call. A season ticket to local theater is well worth it.
