CLEARWATER - Gaither fell behind early at the Puma Challenge soccer tournament, but the Cowboys were able to string a couple of goals together and finish with one of two bracket championships Saturday night as Gaither (7-0-1) edged Neptune Beach Fletcher (7-1) 2-1.
"At the beginning of the game they gave us a lot of trouble," coach Eric Sims said. "We made some adjustments and it all worked out."
Cabe Nolan scored to give Fletcher its 1-0 lead, but Gaither's Bruno Bustamante scored to tie the game by halftime. In the second half, Jordan See netted the winner for the Cowboys, who finished the tournament 3-0.
"We're satisfied coming away with winning the tournament," Sims said. "It's always a good thing."
John Nardozzi earned the win in net, and Brendan Howard contributed two assists.
In the second bracket championship game, Palm Harbor University blanked Tallahassee Lincoln 3-0. It was the second win of the day for the Hurricanes (5-0-1), and both were shutouts against previously unbeaten Lincoln (5-2-3).
"Lincoln was a great team, but we were up for the challenge," PHU coach Alex Delgado said.
