PINELLAS PARK Eighteen fifth-graders at Rawlings Elementary will compete this evening at the school's Eco-Invention Science Fair for a chance to have their inventions go to the national competition in California in late December. The event is part of the Doubletree Teaching Kids to CARE Environmental Education Initiative. The exhibits will be judged beginning at 5 p.m. and will be on display for parents and guests from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. The first and second place inventions will be sent to California for the national competition with first- and second-place winners from among the more than 10,000 students across North America who have produced inventions constructed solely from collected recyclable materials for the project. Twenty winners will be chosen in the national competition for an all-expenses paid trip to Seattle at the premiere of the Exploring Trees Inside and Out Environmental Education Exhibit by Doubletree Hotels and the Arbor Day Foundation at the Pacific Science Center in February 2008.
