Plumbing company lays off 20 more
The housing slump forced an 18-year-old plumbing business into a second round of layoffs Monday at its Odessa office and to announce plans to close its Hudson office next week. Erik Suojanen, one of the founders of Plumbers of Suojanen Enterprises, said 22 workers were laid off Monday. Twenty employees of the Hudson office will be transferred to the Odessa operation. Suojanen said he started to notice a downturn in residential construction last year. That forced the company's first round of 20 layoffs about six months ago. Suojanen said Pampering Plumbing, a spinoff of Plumbers of Suojanen Enterprises that opened this fall and is run by his wife Colleen, hasn't been affected by layoffs.

Pedestrian struck by car, badly hurt
A man suffered critical injuries after he was struck crossing U.S. 19 south of Swan Circle about 8 p.m. Monday. The Florida Highway Patrol said 60-year-old Gerald Krajewski of Holiday was driving his 2007 Ford Focus north on U.S. 19 when he struck the man on a dark stretch of the road. Troopers said Krajewski tried to avoid striking the man, whose body hit the front passenger side of the vehicle before he bounced off and landed in a northbound turn lane. The man, who was not identified, was taken to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg with critical injuries.
