DADE CITY - Two teenagers were killed and another woman suffered minor injuries in a two-car accident on Handcart Road Tuesday afternoon, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
Troopers said the right rear tire of a southbound 1996 Honda Accord blew out as the Honda, driven by an 18-year-old male, tried to pass another vehicle. The Honda lost control before it could return to its lane and collided with a northbound 2003 Kia Sedona.
The Honda's driver and his 16-year-old female passenger died at the scene. The Florida Highway Patrol had not released their names Tuesday evening, but did say both were from Land O'Lakes.
The Kia's driver, Connie Johns, 42, was airlifted with non-life-threatening injuries to a Tampa hospital, troopers said.
Sharon Carey, 50, said the Honda tried to pass her Buick Park Avenue when its tire separated. Rubber pelted her car, she said, as she watched the two vehicles collide. She thought there was not enough space for the Honda to pass, even if its tire remained intact.
"In my opinion, the Honda shouldn't have passed," she said. The Kia was only "two telephone pole lengths" away.
Handcart Road remained closed to traffic for several hours Tuesday as troopers investigated the accident.

Notice the word OPINION in the statement. They did not interview the FHP who told me to my face that David was, "well within his lane when his tire blew." Families have lost their babies..ENOUGH SAID. May these children Forever REST IN PEACE.

I personally know David and his family and David was not a reckless teen. How dare you pass judgement on these children. I will pray that something like this never happens to your family. That's why it's called an accident.

I know that this is free speech but I believe that the editor should use discretion when it comes to some of the postings. I'm paralyzed due to an accident I'm not bitter. Pray for the fellow who killed the girls, he is going through hell right now

I've seen an awful lot of irresponsible drivers that weren't teens, AJ. This is just tragic, period. It's just as tragic every day you hear of an accident (look that word up) happening in any city on any given day. Becky just happens 2 b my niece.

Rebecca was a very sweet girl. She was always a good student in my class. She will be missed. Shame on you, Fredrick, for assuming that these kids didn't care about the other driver. Kids make dumb decisions but it is usually without malice.

Frederick, they were teenagers--as is typical with kids they had no regard for their OWN safety. However, now, so sadly, they're gone. I think you should have gone with your first instinct and not bothered to pass judgement.

Not sure what exactly your comment means Fred...they certainly don't give enough spaces to finish a thought here.Just why didn't she slam on her brakes, when she saw there wasn't enough room for them?

I wanted to keep not pass judgement before readig this aricle, but there it was in print..."She thought there was not enough space for the Honda to pass, even if its tire remained intact." Once again, no regard for others safety!
