TAMPA - Bucs running back Michael Pittman participated on a limited basis in Thursday's practice, but the veteran indicated he will miss Sunday's division matchup at New Orleans.
Pittman, who aggravated a 6-week-old ankle injury Nov. 18 at Atlanta, said he does not anticipate being placed on injured reserve, which would end his season. But he has resigned himself to not playing for at least another week.
"I'm trying to be back for the Houston game on Dec. 9 or the Atlanta game after that," said Pittman, who has missed five of the past six games. "I don't want to rush it, but I'm getting closer."
Pittman said after the Nov. 18 game he might have returned prematurely. The Bucs will be particularly cautious about when he plays next.
"I don't know that his status changes much," coach Jon Gruden said of Pittman working out. "Some of these guys have to eventually test it out, and we'll see how he feels (today)."
OTHER INJURIES: There was no change in the status of quarterback Jeff Garcia, who has not practiced since bruising his back Sunday and is questionable.
Defensive end Greg Spires (calf) practiced on a limited basis for the second straight day but remains questionable.
KIFFIN OFF RADAR?: It seems defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin is not a target of Nebraska's coaching search after all.
The Cornhuskers have interviewed University of Buffalo coach Turner Gill and LSU defensive coordinator Bo Pelini since Saturday's firing of Bill Callahan.Kiffin, a former Nebraska player and assistant, doesn't appear to be in their plans.
VIP VISIT: The Bucs had a special spectator during practice: country music star Charlie Daniels.
"He's a legend," Gruden said. "I'll tune into The Devil Went Down to Georgia while I'm doing my (preparation for today)."
