Hospice event recalls Pearl Harbor

BROOKSVILLE
In remembrance of Pearl Harbor Day and in honor of the military, Hernando-Pasco Hospice will present a special presentation Friday at the Greater Hernando County Chamber of Commerce, 101 E Fort Dade Ave.
A presentation with the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10209 Color Guard will be at 11:30 a.m. Immediately following, there will be a ceremony for Hernando-Pasco Hospice's Tree of Life. The program will be about an hour, and light refreshments will be served.
The chamber is one of 10 locations HPH has a tree to honor or remember loved ones who are living or who have died. For a donation in any amount, one can place or have an ornament put on one of the Trees of Life in Hernando, Citrus or Pasco counties. A tag bearing the name of the individual for whom the ornament was given will be attached, if desired.
Funds raised will support patient care. Hospice is a nonprofit organization that provides care, comfort and support to individuals and loved ones affected by a life-limiting illness. For information, call toll-free 1-800-486-8784 or visit the Web site at www.hphospice.org.

Kids' art can help Red Cross with message
The American Red Cross is sponsoring a statewide poster contest as part of the 1008 Hazardous Weather Awareness Week.
Fourth- and fifth-graders throughout Florida are invited to participate. The top winners' art will be displayed in the state Capitol complex during the first week of February. Prizes include cash awards and weather radios from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
Posters must be postmarked on or before Jan. 28 and must arrive at the American Red Cross no later than Jan. 30. Winners will be notified by phone.

Memorial service will honor WWII's dead
The AT&T Pioneers Life Member Club of Spring Hill will host a memorial service at 1 p.m. Friday at Chocachatti Elementary School, 4135 California St.
The memorial will honor the 16 servicemen from Hernando County who gave their lives during World War II.
The speaker will be Hernando County Schools superintendent Wayne Alexander. Also present will be the chaplain from Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10209 and color guards. Music and taps will be played by Michelle DiLuigio, assistant director of the Hernando Symphony Orchestra.
Students from Chocachatti will place a flag at each of the 16 trees that were planted in honor of the servicemen. For details, call Bob Muehlbauer at 686-6962.

Christmas parade taking a detour
The Kiwanis Club of Brooksville will host the 33rd annual "Stars of Christmas" Brooksville Christmas Parade on Saturday in downtown Brooksville. The parade lineup is 7:30 to 9 a.m. The parade will start promptly at 10 a.m.
This year's parade route has been modified. The parade will start on Oakwood Drive (behind Hernando High School), go south on Howell Avenue, past Fort Dade Avenue on Main Street, north on Broad Street to Bell Avenue.

Shoe drive will benefit foster kids
The Hernando County Foster/Adoptive Association, Kids Central Inc. and the Guardian ad Litem program have launched the One, Two, Buckle My Shoe Drive in Hernando County, which is going on through Dec. 14.
Donations of new shoes are needed, which will be given to children in foster, adoptive and relative care families throughout Hernando County. All sizes are needed and appreciated. Monetary donations are also appreciated, with 100 percent to be used for the purchase of shoes.
Donations can be made at the Guardian ad Litem office, Room 220 in the Hernando County Government Center, 20 N Main St., Brooksville. Before dropping off donations, please call Carolyn at 754-4226 or Linda at 754-0377.

Eat, drink and bring joy with a gift
Aglow Spring Hill Morning Lighthouse will host a Christmas banquet at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at Atria Evergreen Woods, 7030 Evergreen Woods Trail.
The menu choice is pot roast with gravy or stuffed baked chicken, which will be served with vegetables, dessert and beverage. There will be entertainment and door prizes. Also, those attending are asked to bring a gift to be donated to the Baby Love Crisis Center.

Church musical has sound and film
First United Methodist Church will present "Repeat the Sounding Joy" Christmas Musical at 7 p.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday at the church, 9344 Spring Hill Drive.
The cantata will feature the 75-voice Chancel Choir, drama team, children's choir and orchestra, directed by Jack Evans. The show will retell the message of Christ's birth through new and favorite seasonal songs and a variety of musical and visual mediums, including a tribute to classic Christmas films.

FHP inspection points on two dozen roads
Florida Highway Patrol will conduct drivers license and vehicle inspection checkpoints throughout December along the following Hernando County roads:
Lake Lindsey Road, Citrus Way, Cortez Boulevard (west of U.S. 19), Ayers Road, Hayman Road, Croom Road, Snow Memorial Road, Mondon Hill Road, Fort Dade Avenue, Culbreath Road, Powell Road, Sunshine Grove Road, Pine Island Drive, Spring Lake Highway, Shoal Line Boulevard, Horselake Road, Ridge Manor Boulevard, Daly Road, Grove Road, Horselake Road, Osowaw Boulevard, Barnett Road, Burwell Road, WPA Road, Yontz Road, Kettering Road and Reynolds Road.
Troopers will concentrate their efforts on vehicles being operated with defects such as bad brakes, worn tires and defective lights. Also, attention will be directed to drivers violating driver's license laws.

A little New York for the holidays
John Leggio's Center for the Performing Arts will present its holiday production of "Christmas in New York" at 7 p.m. Dec. 17 at the Eleanor Dempsey Performing Arts Center at Bishop McLaughlin Catholic High School, 13651 Hays Road.
The show takes a holiday journey through the streets of New York City, from Times Square to Rockefeller Center.
Tickets are $15 (reserved seating) and can be purchased at John Leggio's Center on County Line Road from 3 to 9 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays or Thursdays.
Those who purchase tickets from the center can pay by Visa, MasterCard, American Express, cash or check. Tickets will also be available at the door but must be paid by cash or check only.

Hernando County Development Services will review code compliance at 9 a.m. Dec. 20 at Hernando County Engineering Department, 1525 E Jefferson St.
On the agenda: Florida Tradition Holdings (modular bank office on Barclay Avenue), Glen Lakes Partnership tennis court parking lot, Tilli's Pizza (interior remodeling) and Winder Horizon school expansion.
